Expert's Opinion
It is undeniable that the purchasing/supply chain positions are at the center of tomorrow’s issues and challenges for companies.
Strategic and transversal functions, if there is such a thing, can permit to go faster, do better and be less expensive than the competition while preserving the environment. The purchasing and supply chain functions are becoming a real engine of growth for companies, and their professionals are gradually becoming true business partners, creating value for the company.
However, nowadays, to obtain this new status of business partner, purchasing and supply chain professionals need much more than just first-class technical skills!
Purchasing and supply chain professionals must know how to evolve and promote their functions and performance, both within their own organization and externally with their suppliers. They must be prepared to learn and implement new processes and information systems which are transversal, integrated, and connected. They must also be adaptable and able to change, to be curious, and open-minded.
Interpersonal skills, such as communication skills, influencing skills, agility and flexibility, initiative and creativity, as well as an interest in new technologies, in order to select the right tools and then coordinate effectively, have become equally essential.
In a fast-changing environment, technical knowledge can become outdated. They are not a state of mind, but rather an approach.
